Rather than a species of moth, Cirsium is actually a genus of flowering plants commonly known as thistles.
Around the world and in various religions, thistles are known to represent devotion, bravery, determination, and strength. Used for protection and good luck in some cultures, the thistle in this painting reflects a season of growth, perseverance, and the hardy and persistent presence of joy and beauty – despite all odds.
